Overall Philosophy
I believe that in order for a student-athlete to be successful they must give massive amounts of attention and time to education and sport. Time management, preserving mental clarity and improving physical fitness, along with sports specific skills, are all critical in the achievement of a student-athlete’s goals both on and off the field.
I Train Response Ability
Reimagining and introducing the often used word responsibility as “response-ability” helps me reframe what I feel is the desired outcome of training, creating an effective response to failure that ultimately leads to a consistant successful outcome. It also denotes it as a skill that can, and should, be improved upon.
Student-athletes must have highly effective responses to the challenges they face on a daily basis to acheive their desired goals. Proper time management, mental clarity, physical fitness and improvement of sports specific skills are only possible by those who have the ability to respond well in high pressure situations. Therefore as a coach I believe my overall goal is to improve a student-athletes response-ability. In sport effective physical and mental responses to failure are crucial to success and that is why failure is a key component to winning. It creates valuable lessons and creates real opportunities for growth.
The most successful people in any field have failed the most but it is not their failures that created their success, it was their ability to respond to those failures in effective ways that led them to success. In creating student-athletes who respond to failure effecively you are not only giving them tools to be successful on the field but also enabling them to be resilient in real life situations off the field as well.
The Ability to Succeed
The ability to succeed is within all of us! In sports I believe success is determined by how well you train in the following areas:
- Physical Ability
- The ability to physically perform sport-specific skills at a high level.
- Mental Ability
- The ability to maintain a mental outlook that facilitates successful outcomes.
- Sport-Specific Ability
- The ability to perform sport specific skills at a high level.
- Response Ability
- The ability to choose the most effective response in a given situation to improve the odds of success.
